Senior Data Scientist

About us

Traitology is an early stage, integrated, digital biology company with a streamlined pipeline for creation of value-added products. By embracing a philosophy that is technology-agnostic, we dedicate all our energy towards discovery and accelerated development of crop varieties to produce higher yields, to show resilience in the face of changing climate, emerging pests, and diseases.  We leverage unique crop genetics, computational biology and new breeding technologies like genome editing to scale new product development focused on improving productivity in the field and making agriculture more sustainable.

  • Senior Data Scientist is a hands-on role for a highly organized, motivated, and results-oriented scientist to join our rapidly growing team of Traitologists

  • We are looking for individuals with experience in organization, annotation, and analyses of genomic, transcriptomic, and phenotypic datasets to enable pan-omic insights for our trait discovery program.

  • The right candidate will bring the skills essential to handle very large data sets, accurate annotation, and capabilities to implement robust bioinformatic pipelines for gene discovery, trait elucidation and novel editing strategies.

  • The successful candidate will work with a team of experts in various aspects of soybean trait discovery and development.

  • If you have what it takes and are looking to grow your career in a fast-paced company, we’d love to hear from you.

  • This highly visible role reports to: VP of Research.

The Responsibility

  • Develop cutting edge bioinformatic tools and interface to identify genome editing targets for trait creation in crops such as soybean.

  • Manage relationships with third-party collaborators in Data/Decision Sciences

  • Create an analytics platform that generates and integrates genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic and phenomic datasets from proprietary germplasm collections.

  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams to define editing strategies and characterize edits through deep sequencing.

  • Present, report and communicate progress and results to stakeholders at various levels.

  • Maintain detailed and organized records of your code, algorithms and project data

  • Collaborate with colleagues to troubleshoot and develop optimized workflows

  • Experience analyzing large genomic datasets, genome annotation, gene prediction and/or experience with other ‘omics’ datasets to identify target genes for crop improvement, including pan-genomic and epigenomic datasets.

  • Demonstrated experience with phylogenomic analysis, evolutionary and comparative genomics analysis and methods; genome assembly and annotation using second and third generation sequencing data is highly desirable

  • In-depth knowledge with gene regulatory networks and various mechanism for gene expression modulation.

  • Experience working in the cloud environment such as AWS or Azure.

  • Experience in one or more areas of advanced analytics is preferred (e.g. advanced statistical analysis & modeling, machine learning, or artificial intelligence).
