Plant Genomics and Bioinformatics

About us

Traitology is an early stage, integrated, digital biology company with a streamlined pipeline for creation of value-added products. By embracing a philosophy that is technology-agnostic, we dedicate all our energy towards discovery and accelerated development of crop varieties to produce higher yields, to show resilience in the face of changing climate, emerging pests, and diseases.  We leverage unique crop genetics, computational biology and new breeding technologies like genome editing to scale new product development focused on improving productivity in the field and making agriculture more sustainable.

Positions:  Multiple

Hiring levels:  Scientist and or Senior Scientist

Research Triangle Park, NC

The Role

  • Scientist/Senior Scientist, Plant Genomics and Bioinformatics is a hands-on role for a highly organized, motivated, and results-oriented scientist to join our rapidly growing team of Traitologists.

  • We are looking for individuals with experience in organization, annotation, and analyses of genomic, transcriptomic, and phenotypic datasets to enable pan-omic insights for our trait discovery program.

  • The right candidate will bring the skills essential to handle very large data sets, accurate annotation, and capabilities to implement robust bioinformatic pipelines for gene discovery, trait elucidation and novel editing strategies.

  • The successful candidate will work with a team of experts in various aspects of soybean trait discovery and development. If you have what it takes and are looking to grow your career in a fast-paced company, we’d love to hear from you.

  • This role reports to: VP of Research.

The Responsibility

  • Survey and re-analyze existing soybean genomic and transcriptomic dataset in the context of Traitology’s unique germplasm collections and trait interests.

  • Develop cutting edge bioinformatic tools and interface to identify genome editing targets for trait creation in crops such as soybean.

  • Build an analytics platform that generates and iintegrates genomic, transcriptomic, metabolomic and phenomic datasets from proprietary germplasm collections.

  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams to define editing strategies and characterize edits through deep sequencing.

  • Present, report and communicate progress and results to stakeholders at various levels.

  • Maintain detailed and organized records of your code, algorithms, and project data.

  • Collaborate with colleagues to troubleshoot and develop optimized workflows.

  • Accountable for maintaining highest scientific standards and ethical integrity.

  • Responsible for upholding a positive image of Traitology at scientific meetings and other external engagements.

  • A PhD in Bioinformatics, Computational biology, Computer Science with emphasis on plant genomics is preferred .

  • Experience analyzing large plant genomic datasets, genome annotation, gene prediction and/or experience with other ‘omics’ datasets to identify target genes for crop improvement, including pan-genomic datasets is highly desirable.

  • Demonstrated experience with phylogenomic analysis, evolutionary and comparative genomics analysis and methods; genome assembly and annotation using second and third generation sequencing data is highly desirable.

  • At least 2 years of demonstrated experience in developing bioinformatics tools/pipelines and data analysis strategies in a corporate setting or in a post-doctoral program will be given preference.

  • Strong experience in Python or R programming for statistics or scientific programming. Experience in additional programming languages is a plus

  • In-depth knowledge with gene regulatory networks and various mechanism for gene expression modulation.

  • Experience working in the cloud environment such as AWS or Azure.

  • Excellent planning, organization, and execution skills
