The Role

  • Scientist/Associate Scientist I, II or III, Trait Creation, is a hands-on, lab-based role for a highly organized, motivated, and results-oriented scientist to join our rapidly growing team of Traitologists

  • This is an opportunity for plant tissue culture experts and genome editors.

  • We are looking for individuals with experience in key row crops (soybean, corn, wheat) transformation, and a passion for new trait creation using genome editing tools.

  • The right candidate will bring an analytical mindset and the ability to optimize workflows rapid discovery, creation, and validation of traits.

The Responsibility

  • Perform plant tissue transformation and regeneration in soybean

  • Generate and maintain high volume plant tissue culture material

  • Prepare plant tissue culture media to support novel trait creation programs

  • Analyze and validate trait generation using molecular technologies

  • Perform molecular cloning, including but not limited to construct purification, vector construction, nucleic acid preparation, sequencing, QC, and interpretation

  • Maintain detailed and organized records of your protocols and project data

  • Collaborate with team to troubleshoot and develop optimized workflows

  • Accountable for maintaining highest scientific standards and ethical integrity

  • Responsible for upholding a positive image of Traitology at scientific meetings and other external engagements

Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.), or a Master's degree (M.S.) in plant biology, plant breeding, genetics, or related subject.

  • A doctoral degree or >10 years hands-on experience in the industry is preferred for the Scientist position.

  • At least 4 years of plant tissue culture experience in an academic or industry environment is required

  • Experience with aseptic techniques, microbiology, and chemistry

  • Experience with molecular biology software and ELN is preferredAn understanding of principles of microbiology and molecular biology

  • Excellent observational skills and attention to detail

  • Excellent planning, organization, and execution skills

  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; interact effectively with peers

  • Remain highly adaptable, flexible, and maintain positive attitude

  • Proficiency with microscopy, software packages and electronic notebooks

  • High level of energy, self-motivation, ownership, and focused execution

  • Enthusiasm for new challenges, innate curiosity, and problem-solving

  • Strategic thinking, willingness to take risks, and learning from failure

  • Experience with high-throughput lab automation is a plus

  • Excellent planning, organizational and execution is a critical skillset

  • Strong written and oral communication skills; interact effectively with peers
